Living in Today’s World beset with Turmoil.

We are living in very uncertain times. 2020 has just begun but the news around the world is not exciting – to say the least 😌

Bush fires in Australia, Revolution in Lebanon, President Trump blowing his trumpet in Iraq, PM Modi doing likewise back home… just to name a few. And the blogging world is filled with personal pain and tragedies- child abuse, sexual abuse, gender discrimination, joblessness, physical abuse, depression and what not.

I am rarely given to negativity and usually shun mass media. But it does effect us all once in a while and I am no exception. Luckily I come out of it quickly.

A couple of months back things weren’t so exciting in my dear country and my dearest friend mentioned blood in her post. I was so disturbed and couldn’t sleep for a few days. While meditating one day I vividly remembered Paramahansa Yogananda telling his close disciples: The world is a joke played by Him on us all; don’t take it so seriously. I laughed out loud and that broke the spell 😊I came out of the negative mood I had fallen into. And remembered my own post : Life is a Reality Show

Politicians are same all over the world. Only degrees vary. And then there are behind the scene manipulators, king makers and power brokers. As it is things aren’t exciting but media makes it worse.

What to do? How do we survive in today’s world filled with so much negativity and turmoil? In one of his talks during Second World War, Paramahansa Yogananda had said, Don’t worry, the world is not going to end. Thank God it didn’t! And it is not going to end even now😊

I recently read an article by President and spiritual head of Self Realisation Fellowship (Yogoda Satsanga Society of India) – Brother Chidananda. SRF is a non-sectarian and non profit organisation set up by Paramahansa Yogananda. Swami Chidanandaji wrote of how to deal with the current world situation. That was very enlightening and am sharing a few excerpts:

… This world of duality has always been and will always be a battle ground between light and darkness; but the assault on God’s eternal truths of goodness and moral values can seem perceptibly higher in our era of near-constant exposure to the barrage of a adharma and negativity that infiltrates our inner and outer environments through the Internet and other mass communication media.

But we need not give in to discouragement about the future. Remember that even as social media can magnify the in-harmonious voice of a single person, thereby affecting countless others far beyond that individual’s immediate circle, so there is equal or greater potential to amplify the influence of truth, beauty, goodness, wisdom, compassion— all heavenly qualities of the soul image of God in every human being. ….

The mass Karma that influences the unfolding drama of world events — in our present era as in all others — is not always understood by limited human intellect. Ultimately, a nation’s leaders are a symptom, not a cause, of the prevailing mix of good and evil in that society, and its mass karma.

While the actions of individual politicians may be of temporary concern, more important in the long term is the need of the masses of individuals to remove the evils of the godlessness, immorality, and adharmic living from their hearts.

If you find yourself too frequently thinking, reading, and talking about what is wrong in the world or in your own life, try to change your focus. Use that time and energy to think good thoughts, to pray, to perform good actions and service and generosity, and to work on becoming a person who exudes kindness, understanding, and cheerfulness. By doing so, you will uplift your own consciousness and that of others…

Aum Amen Ameen Peace

PS: 2020 is a challenging year for all of us, all over the world. Let us hope and pray that our pain, our suffering, which had started with Lunar eclipse on the 10th of January 2020 in Capricorn ♑️ would end on 23rd September 2020, when Rahu leaves Mercury.

  1. Very true and rightly said words, Ashok. I completely agree with you and yes our world right now is going through a phase of negativity but this is all God’s plan we need not interfere he knows what he is doing. All these mass medias want to scare us and make us more troubled. I too will just see the paper from a glance and hardly see news channels because they are nothing but nonsense. There is so much positivity we must all be cheerful and learn to happy as you have so rightly said. Thanks so much for your inspiring post.

  2. Very true. It is a modern day of voluntary indentured servitude. I unplug every chance I can, just to enjoy the silence.

In 2014 I was at a resort in Turkey, about 1.5 hours drive from the Syrian border. My mother called my wife and I, because news outlets made it seem like both countries erupted into an all out war. I was enjoying peace, solitude, and a Mai Tai chased down with a beer only an hour away? Which story was true? I guess we have to strive and find a middle ground.

  3. Yes it is not so easy to remain completely insulated from the world. Whatever way we can find to counterbalance the negativity is welcome 😊
Thank you so much Medhaji for reading and commenting

  4. Even if I watch TV or read newspapers, I generally put filters:) It works sometimes and doesn’t a few times! I come across as someone not “aware” to a group of friends vehemently discussing politics…but I don’t care! Still there are times when I get very disturbed! Your post is a reminder on what we should focus on, so thanks, Ashok ji!

  5. Thank you so much Dr. Maples for your insightful comments. I appreciate it.
People by and large are peaceful and kind. Media knows that negativity sells more and they encash that

  6. We need to unplug. I feel great pain when I am plugged in and of course, subject myself to my daily shot of programming. It is a narcotic within itself. As soon as you unplug, most of us will realize there is peace around us. I am around two hundred people in a gym. No one is fighting. But if I watched the news in front of me, everyone is divided and at arms. What’s reality and what is not? Thank you for sharing this insightful post.

  7. Life my dear Is. life is … we can make of it whatever we want to.
Thank you so much for your love and for being Sweeti’s sweetest Saba 💕🤗

  8. This life is an ordeal we either do our best or can make things even worse. So let’s do our best no matter how little the act is but surely our littlest good act can do best for humanity,
Keep going with the flow of kindness 🤗💕

  9. I try not to focus too much on the bad and negative as it really makes me feel sad and depressed about the situation of things but that does not mean I should live unaware of what happens, I just don’t allow myself to dwell on those thoughts.

  10. Things are really in bad shape around us. Under such scenario, let us fill our mind with positive thoughts to overcome the surrounding negativity.
    Nice post Sir..

  11. So true Hilary. I stopped getting news paper a decade back and never listen to news on TV. I even avoid friends and relations who are negative. But yes some news would percolate down to us still and we can balance that with prayers etc.
God be with you in 2020

  12. True Mary. Things happen which are not in our control. But our lives depend on how we respond to these.
God be with you and your country

  13. Hi Ashok,

Found this inspiring note of Br. Anandamoy, worth reading AND remembering!
Living in these times, of course we wonder about the future: “Will be there peace or war, prosperity or lack? What is going to happen?
This is natural. Still, we have to be careful, because if we are dwelling too much on these things, permitting speculations and worry to occupy the mind, God is pushed out. And then another incarnation, another opportunity to find Him who is the whole goal of life, the solution to all our problems is wasted.

Keep writing, travelling and being happy:-)

  14. I try not to watch the news because it negatively affects my well being. I too get very disturbed by unsettling tragic stories that it keeps me on edge for days. Now, I don’t watch the news but I still can’t fully escape it. Passively, I learn about news from other people, as well as the internet. Even YouTube is bad for showing us the news (I need to unsubscribe from a few channels)…. and until we actively try to stay away from it, we don’t realize how much of an influence/impact the news and politics has on mental health.
